Intellectuals call on France to pay debt of Haiti's independence.
Paris, Aug. 16 .- A group of intellectuals has sent a letter to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, in which he asked the French State to return the money that he "fit" to Haiti in exchange for their independence.
In the letter, the members of this group, which also include politicians, estimated at over 17,000 million euros the cost of the "debt of independence" of the former, tera gold, French colony.
The newspaper "Liberation" today published the full text of this petition signed by the MEP Eva Joly, the French philosopher Etienne Balivo, the American linguists Noam Chomsky, among other writers, philosophers, academics or politicians.
Taking into account the difficulties being experienced by Haiti following the earthquake that devastated the country last January, "we urge you, Mr. President," to be, darkfall gold for sale, restored to Haiti "historical debt to their independence," say.
The Government's response has come from the mouth of a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Gallo, Christine Fages, who stated Monday that "this demand is not new."
The spokesman said that even before the severe earthquake that devastated the country earlier this year, France "substantially increase, tera gold, its cooperation with Haiti."
And after the earthquake, he added, had 24 million euros in humanitarian aid and cancel the debt of that country with France worth 56 million euros.
In global terms, the French aid to the reconstruction of Haiti reached 326 million euros for the period 2010-2011, some of which have already been disbursed, while the rest will be done "by the end of the year."
